“When I started having dental problems, about 10 years ago, I was shocked to find out how much it would cost me to save my teeth in the US. I needed to get a couple of root canals and crowns, and in California, the dentist quoted me about $2200 a tooth. With the amount of money I made, that was going to be a very heavy burden financially, and I thought about just having my two molars extracted. However, I had been to visit in Tijuana a couple years before, and thought I would try to find an alternative dental solution there. To make a long story short, I went to a dentist in Tijuana, and counting my travel expenses and an economic hotel, the total came out to less than half the price. I saved over 2 grand, and had a nice little vacation. Over the years, I have continued going to the dentist in Tijuana. I have had a lot of dental work done, and have actually tried out a few dentists. I have had several root canals done, three dental implants, and all my teeth crowned. As I said, over the course of 10 years, not all at once. I know I could never afford to have had this work done in the US. I have probably saved over 25K. But I have great teeth now, and a smile that I am proud of. Some mistakes I made, and tips to other patients. As I said, I had tried a few dental clinics, and I found that not all dentists are equal. One time I went to a small dentist office downtown for a root canal. The regular dentist, who was not a specialist, but who seemed competent, did the root canal. It seemed ok, but about a year later, I needed another root canal in the next tooth. This time I was back over at my regular dentist, who always brings in a certified endodontist. When the x rays were taken, the specialist could see both teeth clearly. She told me that the previous root canal was not done very well. The previous dentist had both missed doing one of the conduits, but had not cleared out the others very well either. She said to expect problems. It didn’t hurt or anything, so I didn’t do anything about it then. But about another year and a half later, I got a severe toothache, and had to have the tooth extracted and an implant done. I wished I had had the specialist do a retreatment when she saw it! The lesson I learned is that there is a very good reason that a specialist has to go to school for a couple more years. To do root canals or dental implants, a dentist needs special training. In a small clinic downtown, the general dentist/owner of the clinic will often try to do work themselves, rather than pay the fee of a specialist, and the results can be a disaster. For the most part, I have been very happy with the quality of the dental I had done in Tijuana. The dentists seem well trained and do good work. But I learned the hard way, and advise you to stay clear of the cut rate small dental clinics. For the past 5 years, I have stayed with Dr. Mexico. I had had a lot of dental work done by Dr. Elizabeth when she was at another clinic, but when she came over to Dr. Mexico, I followed her. She is the Tijuana dentist that has done the majority of the work in my mouth. About the time I started needing dental Implants, she had finished her specialized training for implant surgery, and so she placed the last two implants I needed. Dr. Elizabeth is a very good dentist, and seems naturally talented. She is nearly pain free, and has a soft touch as well. What I like about Dr. Mexico is that they are very well equipped, and only use specialists for other than general work. I have sent several friends to Dr. Mexico, all with excellent results. “I so appreciate the quality dental care I have received at the Dr. Mexico dental clinic in Tijuana. I highly recommend the fine dental staff because I know they give excellent care and are very attentive to the patients needs. They took good care of me with all the trips I have had to make, picking me up at the airport, and arranging everything while I was there. My story is this, I was in real dental trouble before I started my treatment in Tijuana, because the costs were so expensive in the US. With my many dental problems, causing my teeth to start to fall out at home, I couldn’t afford to get everything fixed. I had been injured many years ago in an accident, with my upper jaw broken, and my eye socket crushed. Over the years, the bone quality deteriorated, and my teeth had gotten loose from all the bone loss. My upper teeth all needed to be extracted, and there was not enough bone to hold regular implants. I couldn’t stand the idea of going the rest of my life with dentures, but the dental surgeon in Tijuana, advised me of the possibility of zygomatic implants that actually anchor in the cheek bones. I decided that whatever the cost, I wanted to have something permanent done. Thank God that the dental work in Tijuana is so much cheaper than in my hometown. The dental work in Mexico, would have cost me over $30 thousand dollars more in the US. I had 4 zygomatic implants surgically placed, with a zirconium all on 4 dental bridge permanently mounted on them. I also had 4 regular implants on the bottom, with crowns. The cost was about $20 thousand, so it was a significant savings. My Tijuana dentist was also very capable. He is a certified maxio-facial dental surgeon. The procedure was something that a regular dentist could not do, and required an operating room with general anesthesia. The results are fantastic. The main work in my upper jaw, the all on four, is nothing like a denture, It looks very real, and does not move at all. I cannot take it out. It does not overlap my gums, and does not feel clunky in my mouth. I can smile with confidence! Also, with my bottom molars being replaced by the other implants, I can finally chew anything comfortably. If someone is fearful about going to Mexico for dental work, all I can say is, Tijuana is much nicer and more modern than you might imagine. I felt very secure, and have stayed in nice hotels for cheap. Dr. Mexico has a driver who picks you up at the border and takes you back and forth to the hotel.
