England vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test Live Scores | ENG vs SL 2nd Test Day 3 Live Scores & Commentary

England finish with 25/1 and a lead of 256 runs in the second innings. An exciting day of cricket which began with Gus Atkinson smashing the bowlers all over park to get a historic century at Lord’s Asitha Fernando claiming a five-fer to end the first English innings for 427. Sri Lanka were not too lucky bat and kept losing wickets at regular interval.

The top 3 failed to impress once more with Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal adding 48 for the 4th wicket to guide the innings forward. Sri Lanka lost 3 more wickets in a bunch with both Mathews Chandimal departing alongside the skipper Dhananjaya de Silva for a duck. Kamindu Mendis who boasted an average of 92 before this innings.

Came in at number 7 and along with the lower order took the score from 87/6 to 196 scoring a classic 74 in 120 balls with 8 fours and 3 maximums. The English pacers shared 2 rewards each amongst them. Potts bowling the most economic spell of 2/19 in 11 overs. Chris Woakes leading the attack was moving the ball at will with 2/21.

Gus Atkinson after his knock also picked up 2/40 including the prized scalp of Mendis. Sri Lanka have drawn first blood removing Dan Lawrence early in the 2nd innings. Ben Duckett (15* off 24) and Ollie Pope (2* off 6) remain unbeaten at the close of play. The English middle order can do with some runs with Ollie Pope not in the best of batting form.

Only 7 cricketers have scored 600 or more in their first five Tests so far. Kamindu Mendis is one of them and he still has an innings in hand. The Sri Lankan left-handed batter has a total of 627 runs in just 8 innings including three centuries and half-centuries. The others to be on this list are Sunil Gavaskar of India (831) Headley of West Indies (714) Harry Brook of England (623) Conway of New Zealand (623) Hunter of West Indies (622) and Bradman of Australia (607).

England pocket the final session and end the day with their noses ahead. Inserted to bat on a sunny day the hosts lost three wickets in the morning session although there wasn’t too much assistance for the pacers. Lawrence chased a wide ball to nick off Pope fell to short ball and Duckett holed out while trying to reverse-sweep.

A couple of partnerships were building in the post-lunch session but Sri Lanka managed to chip away they picked two more wickets in that phase. And when Woakes was bounced out for 6 England were 216/6 and Dhananjaya’s decision bowl didn’t seem like a bad move. Root Atkinson bailed their team out of trouble with a 92-run stand for the 7th wicket.

Root got off the mark with a boundary off the very first ball batted with a lot of conviction against some disciplined bowling wasn’t perturbed by the events at the other end and notched up his 33rd Test hundred – thereby levelling Sir Alastair Cook for the most Test centuries by an England batsman. Against the run of play and with the second new ball not too far away he got out playing his famed reverse-scoop. Sri Lanka couldn’t capitalise on that wicket as they leaked runs.

Not many gave Sri Lanka a chance when the series got underway. And on expected lines the island nation were put under the pump after they conceded a lead of 122. By the time they could surpass it they had already lost four wickets. However they came up with an excellent comeback from thereon with both bat and ball to stretch England right till the end.

They would hope to draw some confidence from that finish at Old Trafford in their bid to pull one back. Kamindu Mendis was excellent once again as his stocks continued to rise. Debutant Milan Rathnayake was a surprise package as well. If senior players like Dinesh Chandimal Angelo Mathews and Dimuth Karunaratne can chip in the visitors can give a good account of themselves. Sri Lanka will also be happy with the fact that they won’t be facing.
