Darko Karamazan und Vlado Ladarevic stehen vor einer bröckelnden Hauswand in einem kroatischen Dorf. Zwischen den Ritzen schlängelt sich eine Hornotter – eine der giftigsten Schlangen Europas. Darko und Vlado sind Kroatiens einzige zertifizierte Schlangenfänger. Sie wollen die Schlangen nicht nur fangen: Sie wollen die scheuen, schönen Tiere auch schützen.

In einem kroatischen Dorf schlängelt sich zwischen den Ritzen einer bröckelnden Hauswand eine Hornotter – eine der giftigsten Schlangen Europas. Kroatiens einzige zertifizierte Schlangenfänger, Darko Karamazan und Vlado Ladarevic, sind im Einsatz. Eine unvorsichtige Bewegung könnte ihnen einen gefährlichen Biss einhandeln. Doch die beiden Männer bleiben ruhig. Mit jahrelanger Erfahrung nähern sie sich vorsichtig dem gefährlichen Reptil. Vlado greift behutsam mit einem speziellen Haken nach der Schlange, während Darko den Fluchtweg blockiert. In einer fließenden Bewegung packt Vlado die Hornotter hinter dem Kopf – Mission erfüllt!
Darko und Vlado werden gerufen, wenn eine Schlange in einem Haus oder in einer Scheune entdeckt wird. Oft müssen sie dafür hunderte Kilometer fahren. Sie fangen die Schlange, registrieren sie und setzen sie an ungefährlicher Stelle wieder aus. Die Schlangen sind streng geschützt, jeder Fund muss ans Umweltministerium gemeldet werden.
Die Hornotter, die Vesna Stimac gebissen hat, bezahlte das mit ihrem Leben. Der Sohn erschlug das Tier, um es im Krankhaus zu zeigen. Vesna hat seit dem Biss einen gelähmten Arm. Aber sie hatte auch Glück, weil der Sohn wusste, dass man die Wunde weder aussaugen noch abbinden sollte. Sonst kann sich das Gift in einem Körperteil sammeln und dort noch mehr Schaden anrichten. Schlangenbisse sind in Kroatien extrem selten.
Darko und Vlado wollen über Schlangen aufklären, Vorurteile abbauen. “Die Menschen sehen nur zehn Prozent der Schlangen.”, erklärt Vlado. “Viele verstehen sie nicht und greifen zum nächstbesten Werkzeug, um sie zu töten, anstatt sie zu schützen.”
