こちらの会場では15日午前3時を回ったところなのですが、明かりがともされていて、警備員が時折、巡回しています。党大会の最終日にはトランプ氏がこちらの舞台の上で演説を行う予定で、天井にはフィナーレに使用される色とりどりの風船がすでにセットされています。
トランプ氏はここから車で数分のホテルに滞在していて、ミルウォーキーの街は厳戒態勢が敷かれています。
――銃撃事件について捜査の進展はありましたか。
事件直後、現場近くでペンシルベニア州に住む20歳のトーマス・クルックス容疑者が射殺されましたが、現地メディアによりますと、現場で回収されたライフルは、クルックス容疑者の父親が合法的に購入したものだと判明したということです。
また、クルックス容疑者は、180メートルほどのライフル射撃場を備えた施設の会員で、捜査当局はここで練習をしていたかなど調べを進めています。
そして、容疑者の人となりですが、現場から車で1時間ほどの介護施設で勤務していて、勤務態度に問題はなかったということです。
また、高校の同級生は当時の容疑者について、服装などでからかわれていたと証言しました。
クルックス容疑者の同級生「彼は服装をバカにされていたんだと思う。狩りをする格好の服を着ていることもあった。新型コロナの後も、いつもマスクをつけていた」
犯行の動機はまだわかっていませんが、FBI＝連邦捜査局は単独犯とみて調べを進めています。
