태국 수도 방콕의 한 호텔 객실에서 외국인 6명이 숨진 채 발견됐습니다.

현지 수사당국은 이들이 독살됐을 가능성이 큰 것으로 보고 있습니다.

현지 매체에 따르면 경찰은 어제(16일)저녁 7시 30분쯤, 방콕 중심가 라차프라송에 있는 유명 호텔에서 시신이 발견됐다는 신고를 접수했습니다.

투숙객들이 체크아웃 시간을 넘긴 것을 의심한 호텔 직원이 확인해보니 객실에서 숨져 있었던 겁니다.

사망자 가운데 4명은 베트남 국적자로 파악됐으며, 2명은 미국 시민권자였습니다.

성별은 남성 3명, 여성 3명으로 알려졌습니다.

경찰은 이들이 독극물에 중독돼 숨진 것으로 추정하고 있습니다.

현지 언론은 방 안에서 이들이 커피와 차를 마신 흔적이 남아 있었다고 보도했습니다.

또한, 투숙 명단엔 당초 7명이 예약돼 있었지만, 실제 숙박은 숨진 6명만 한 것으로 전해졌습니다.

이에 따라 경찰은 예약만 하고 숙박을 하지 않은 다른 한 명을 유력한 용의자로 보고 뒤를 쫓고 있습니다.

세타 타위신 태국 총리는 곧바로 현장을 찾아 수습에 나섰습니다.

매튜 밀러 미 국무부 대변인도 “유가족에게 진심으로 애도를 표한다”며 “상황을 면밀히 살피고 있고 유가족에게 영사 조력을 제공할 준비가 돼 있다”고 했습니다.
