Bangladesh Supreme Court strikes down government job quotas after deadly student protests

After student-led protests, Bangladesh’s Supreme Court has ruled to eliminate most of the quotas on government jobs. At least 114 people have lost their lives in the violent demonstrations that erupted over the job-reservation system.

Dismissing a lower court order, the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division directed that 93 per cent of government jobs should be open to candidates on merit, without quotas, announced said lawyer Shah Monjurul Hoque, who represents the students seeking to end the quota system.

As a result of this decision, business activities have gradually resumed in the capital city, Dhaka. Grocer, Tanvir Hassan, a local grocer, said “people swarmed in like bees,” to his store after a government-ordered curfew imposed on Friday was eased.

Meanwhile, Bangladeshis intending trying to leave the country crowded waited in crowds outside an airline office in Dhaka due to flight cancellations caused by curfews.
