영국에서 어린이 3명이 사망한 흉기 난동 사건 이후 극우 폭력 시위가 계속 확산하고 있습니다.

당국은 주말 사이 약 30곳에서 시위가 벌어질 것으로 보고 대비하고 있습니다.

국제부 취재기자 연결합니다. 홍주예 기자!

폭력 시위의 수위가 어느 정도인가요?

영국 리버풀에 있는 상가에서 사람들이 가게 문을 부수려 하는 장면입니다.

문을 막대기로 때리고, 발로 차기도 합니다.

다음은 같은 날 영국 동부 해안 도시 헐 중심가의 모습입니다.

차가 불에 탔고, 쓰레기통에서도 불길과 검은 연기가 피어오르는 등 도시 곳곳이 아수라장이 됐습니다.

현지 시간 3일, 리버풀과 브리스톨, 헐, 벨파스트 등 영국 각지에서 극우 성향 시위대가 인종차별에 반대하는 단체와 맞서면서 몸싸움과 함께 벽돌과 병 투척 등 폭력이 발생했습니다.

일부는 인근 상점을 약탈하고 불을 질러 도시를 무질서와 혼돈에 빠트렸는데요,

지금까지 영국 전역에서 수십 명이 폭력 행위와 절도 등의 혐의로 체포됐습니다.

로이터는 지난 2011년 흑인 남성이 경찰 총격에 맞아 숨진 사건에 항의하는 시위가 폭동으로 번진 이후 13년 만에 가장 광범위한 폭력과 무질서가 영국 전역을 휩쓸고 있다고 진단했습니다.

이런 폭력 시위가 왜 일어난 건가요?

[기자]
엉뚱하게도, 지난달 29일 영국 북서부 사우스포트에서 어린이를 상대로 벌어진 최악의 흉기 난동 사건이 발단이 됐습니다.

10대 소년이 어린이 댄스교실에 난입한 뒤 흉기를 휘둘러 어린이 3명이 숨지고 10명이 다쳤는데요,

피의자가 무슬림 망명 신청자라는 근거 없는 소문이 소셜미디어에 퍼지면서 반이민, 반무슬림 폭력 시위가 이어지고 있습니다.

그러나 경찰은 범인이 영국 태생이라고 이미 밝혔다며 사실과 다른 억측은 누구에게도 도움이 되지 않는다고 강조했습니다.

키어 스타머 총리도 이번 사태를 “합법적이지 않은 범죄이자 폭력 소요”로 규정하고, ‘극우적 혐오’에서 동력을 얻은 조직적이고 고의적인 행위라고 비판했습니다.

영국 정부는 연일 강경 대응 방침을 강조하고 있는데요,

그러나 반극단주의 단체 ‘호프 낫 헤이트’가 SNS 게시물을 분석한 결과, 주말 새 잉글랜드와 웨일스 지역에서 다문화주의나 이슬람에 반대하는 시위 30여 건이 예정된 것으로 나타났습니다.

이에 따라 당국은 30여 곳에서 시위가 벌어질 것으로 보고 대비하고 있습니다.
